Produsage

A key characteristic of produsage is a collaboration between produsers to create content rather than working as individuals. (Wikipedia)When I study English, Produsage is an excellent way to help us collect tips or tricks how to remember a ton of English vocabularies and how to finger out the particular English grammars which are entirely different of Chinese grammars. Additionally, each of the classmates contributed a vocabulary entry to establish a vocabulary library. That was a big project, however, we effectively collaborated and co-learned to remember infinite vocabularies.

Leah mentioned on the discussion board where produsage has to be avoided. When she instructed counselor-in-training on clients in crisis, risk assessment, and safety planning it is not a time for produsage. I agree with her. When we design safety planning, regulations, laws or rules, it could not be a good opportunities for produsage.

Flickr

Flickr is a photo-sharing network. My favorite feature of Flickr is “groups”. People can participate in different groups to share their photos or view photographs shared by others. Groups can either be public, public (invite only) or completely private. Each group has its own theme presented by the group name. A wide verity of photos with the common theme is aggregated together in one group. Groups are major means of interaction with fellow members of Flickr around common interests. In each group, there is a discussion board that offers communication/learning space for members. People can re-organize their own photos or other authorized photos in different albums. Flickr provides code to embed albums into blogs, websites, and forums or to share albums with other social media tools. Signed-in Flickr users can "Follow" the Photo streams of other Flickr photographers. Users could tag for each posted photo. Tags are a useful navigation tool to add a broader audience to navigate my photos. Any Flickr user can post a Flickr photo with its title and description to introduce the image on its photo page. A comment area is provided for each photograph.
Based on many particular features, is it useful for education/academia? It definitely is a good tool to learn some skills like photography. Flickr would serve as a photographs database which offers professional photos such as medical figures or emergency rescue images. What do you think about the point how to apply it for education? Here is a reference for you--18 Ways with Flickr for Education.

A summary for the article --Social Media and Instructional Design

Citable as: Dennen, V. P. (in press). Social media and instructional design. In R. A. Reiser & J. V. Dempsey (Eds.) Trends and issues in instructional design and technology. Pearson.

Social media have rapidly become a prominent feature of contemporary life.

Problem: Simply deciding that social media should be used to support learning in a particular environment or context does not mean that the shift to design and teach with social media will be a smooth or successful one – even when individuals are already regular users of social media.

Overview of Social Media Tools and Educational Uses
The descriptions of Facebook, Blogs, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Wiki and the common educational uses.

Benefits of social media in Educational uses

1.     Learner- centered study
2.     Content expansion
3.     Access to experts in the field
4.     Get feedback and critique from a wider audience
5.     Self-archiving
6.     Availability of user analytic data

Challenges of social media in Educational uses

1.     Social media technologies have a decentralizing effect in education.
2.     External pressure to incorporate social media into learning activities and assessments
3.     Diminishes learner performance and happiness and raising technostress

Consider the tool

1.     Instructional designer uses secure tools or encourages students to use pseudonyms to overcome privacy concerns.

2.     Instructional designer should be concerned with intellectual property rights on multiple fronts when designing material.
3.     Instructional designer can select tools or services carefully, considering how widespread existing use or acceptance is among the learner population, as well as whether there is any notable dissent among the population regarding the tool or service.

Consider the learner

1.     Instructional designer can provide learning materials to help learners better understand the terms of service agreements and how to use these tools
2.     Instructional designer should consider if the terms of service of the selected tool or service will cause discomfort for any learners.
3.     Instructional designers can develop means of passive engagement with the content and interaction shared by others or alternate learning assignments for individuals who are not comfortable using the medium.4.   Instructional designer considers the learners’ geographical location.

Consider the instructor and learning organization

1.     Instructional designer should consider the risks to and perspectives of the learning organization as well as the instructors and learners
2.     Instructional designers must determine if the terms of service are consistent with the learning organization’s mission, internal policies, and intellectual property rights.

Google Maps

As a learner and an amateur of the new technology, I am not familiar with most of this week tools. But I am incredibly impressed and deeply attracted by a tool and frequently use it  -- Google Maps. I believe that many people have known or have been utilizing it. It is a web mapping service, offering satellite imagery, street maps, street view, real-time traffic conditions and so on. Each of its functions is very practical and meaningful to help people expand their reach scope. The following features/functions are worthwhile to recommend to you.

Parking location:  Before you start driving, you can look up places to park your car. After you reach your destination, particularly parking in a huge parking lot or garage, you can set as a parking location to save this location on the map. It is so convenient for you to find your vehicle later. In case you missed it, the feature lets you save your exact parking location on your cell phone. On the July 4th, our family went to Tom Brown park in Tallahassee for the celebrating party. When we left the park, we found our car immediately in the dark park with this function. Additionally, a user-friendly function- notification can tell you how long your car has been parked. If it sounds good, you could click here for more information.

Google street view: It is a particular feature of Google Maps which provides 360° panoramic street-level views of various locations. I know that street view garnered much controversy after its release because of privacy concerns. But it has more advantages for people’s convenience compared to these issues. For example, before I go to a strange place, like a market, I am not sure exactly what the market is (it is large or small). I will open street view to help me judge whether it is the place I want to go. It is very practical for foreigners to live aboard. For more details, please click here

Share your location: it is the same function as Snap Map’s. I share my real-time location with my husband. It makes me feel safer when I leave FSU library alone in the midnight. It is also a good feature for children’s safety. Here is the specific instruction on how to share your location with others.

Dr. Dennen mentioned a feature--creating a map for an event and share it with others or engage in collaborative mapping. I have no idea about it. Could I create it just on my cell phone? Or produce it on a computer, and then transfer it into a cell phone for use?
